Every year it’s … tradition!

It’s less than three weeks until Christmas. I’m sure you already knew that, but it’s just hit me. The only decorating I’ve done, so far, is here on this blog. I’m not doing much shopping this year, but I’ve put a few little things in my online cart. I’m clearly lagging behind.

I don’t even have a good excuse. It’s not like I’m writing up a storm. (I wish.) One of our sons is a member of the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, and tonight we attend their annual holiday concert, so maybe that will get me in the mood. Even if it doesn’t, I have no more time to waste.

At least I don’t have to plan any menus. We’ll be going to a son’s house for Christmas day, and our Christmas Eve dinner is always the same. We have a Syrian feast. My husband will make the kibbee (triple-ground round steak with cracked wheat and onions) to prepare three ways—my favorite is nayee (raw).

Probably a granddaughter or two will come over to help roll the grape leaves, but it will be up to me alone to see if this year I can successfully make the vegetarian version.

My husband and I make the hummus together. I’ll cook the lubee (grean beans) and pilaf, and make tabouleh, and khyar bi laban (cucumber yogurt salad). Maybe I’ll get ambitious and make fatayer sabanigh (spinach pies). For our oldest son who fondly remembers his Aunt Ronni’s American addition of creamed corn, we’ll have a little of that. Of course, we’ll also have pita, yogurt, olives, braided cheese, raw veggies, baklava and cookies.

And wine, of course! As you can see, the women start on that in the kitchen and we laugh a lot.

This year, all of our sons and grandchildren will be here. At some point, our second son will measure all the grandchildren against the inside of the closet door. Gifts will be given out, starting in an orderly fashion and ending in joyful chaos. And this year, hopefully, we’ll remember to take a family group photo before anyone leaves.

    Your Christmas sounds just like our Thanksgiving. The whole family got together, we cooked, laughed, spoiled the granddaughters and had a wonderful time.

    As of today, I am not sure whose home I’ll be in for Christmas, but it is sure to have some of the same ingredients. Hubby wants to stay home, so we’ll see what develops. Enjoy!


  2. Linda, beautiful Christmas decoration on top! And what a wonderful family. Now, that I see those photos, I understand your familiarity with Middle Eastern customs (and men! Ha). A husband who cooks. What a treat!
    I’ve been in California for over thirty years but unless I’m in the mountains somewhere, where it’s cool and where there is a little snow, I have a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit. I’m from Switzerland and Christmas and the holiday season are always associated with snow and cold weather, a wood-burning stove, etc. etc. So I spend a lot of Christmas times in the “old country.” This year though, I’m here and I started decorating a little bit. I’ll be baking some Christmas cookies with a friend of mine. So, yes, slowly but surely, it will come to me, I hope. Now, all I need is some eggnog.

    1. One correction, Christa, my husband does not regularly cook. He’s just the master of kibbee. And he’s useful for chopping onions because they rarely make his eyes water. 🙂

      I can imagine it’s hard for you to get in the Christmas spirit in Southern California. It was hard enough for me coming from Indiana to Central California, but at least here it’s cool and usually foggy or rainy at Christmas. Turn the air-conditioning up and drink your eggnog. 😉


      1. Air-conditioning? LOL. It’s raining today, so it already feels a little more like Christmas. And on the positive side, I absolutely hate to drive in the snow.
        From your photos, I can tell you have a beautiful family and I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful Holiday season.
        I love that picture on top of the blog. I may switch my blog to WordPress. I am already creating a new website with WP.


        1. My banner photo is from a shot of my Christmas tree a few years ago, Christa. Unfortunately, my last golden bird was a casualty of the disaster last year.

          I like for my blog. The only thing I don’t like is not being able to use javascript widgets like Google Connect. But you’ve confused me. You’re “website” using, includes the blog, right? I mean, WordPress IS a blogging platform.


          1. Yes, Linda, it does include a blog feature. I use the SmallBiz Theme from WordPress for the website. It’s a special theme you have to buy extra. For the time being I tweeked it to call up my blog on Google since that’s what I have been using so far. Once I start blogging on WordPress, I’ll activate that one as well. I don’t want to have to start from scratch.


    2. Hi Christa – I understand your problem. I have lived in New Zealand for most of the past 40 plus years. And Christmas in the summer just doesn’t seem right to me. As my small daughter said, in her little Scottish voice the first Christmas we were here “Mother, when will it snow”

I guess a blonde moment for me in not knowing there might be words attached to the caption that said out of my mind………. 😦


  4. Lovely post – thank you for sharing. Our family traditions included always opening gifts on Christmas Eve when we were growing up and then I would purchase a small table gift for everyone to open with Christmas dinner. This didn’t continue once we were married and had small children.
    When my children were older they had to be home from wherever they had been on Christmas Eve to phone home to my parents in London and their father’s father in Scotland.


  5. Just a good dinner is the only tradition. Last year, it was steaks that were grilled out. A real treat, considering we had a very nice, Colorado day in late December. This year, it’s a rib roast. And, if the weather is as pleasant as last, it will be grilled as well.
